Artist Statement/ Bio

Exploring the intersections of environmental, social and political ecosystems, my artwork is my activism. I crave healing for the living planet, Earth, and all its diverse inhabitants. I aim to elevate the voices of marginalized entities within these ecologies. My art constitutes prayers for decolonized regeneration, my battle cry for justice. Each expression is an embodied activation of hope for a world that works for all beings. Working across mediums, my art examines experimental ways to collaborate with life. Having ample time to play in deserts, rivers and mountains as a kid because of my family’s cattle-raising business, developed my understanding of life systems and their intricate necessity for balance. As a steward of Earth, I strive to effect change in protecting this balance of intelligent life forms.
I am currently focused on three kindred projects simultaneously. Feeding Fungi is a bio art collaboration with fungal mycelia to decompose upcycled-textile sculptures. This bioremediation is a gesture toward reducing fast fashion’s footprint on landfills. Chimeras is a queer feminist exploration into hybridizing creatures from the dregs of the impact of colonialism, and late-stage capitalism. These apocalyptic hybrids are made using mixed media collage on mylar, oil and watercolor paintings. Water is an ongoing project investigating the human relationship with water as a language, ancestor and autonomous entity. The works from this series have included oil and watercolor paintings, collaborative cyanotypes with water, installations and experimental film. My interests are so wide-ranging and iterative, that I grapple with winnowing them down, reflecting the ecological wilderness of my own mind in my artwork.
I am a traditionally trained oil painter from the high-mountain desert of New Mexico. I received a BFA from the University of New Mexico with an emphasis on Painting and Art & Ecology. I have a background in acequia, hydroponic and organic farming- which I consider additional art forms.
